Roger Federer received the Swiss Honorary Award at the Annual Sports Gala in Zurich on Sunday evening. This Award is bestowed on select people for their outstanding contribution to Swiss Award.
Federer, won a record seven-time Swiss Athlete of the Year between 2003 and 2017, received the Honorary Award from Viola Amherd, Federal Councilor and Minister of Sport.
“Thanks for the support that I received during these years. This Award means a lot for me”, said Federer.
Federer ended his legendary career at the Laver Cup in Zurich. He played the final match of his career alongside Rafael Nadal in the doubles.
Federer won 20 Grand Slam titles and has won 1251 singles matches and 103 ATP titles. He has not played in the ATP Tour since Wimbledon 2021 when he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter finals. Federer had been sidelined for 14 months by a knee injury.
During his career Federer also won Swiss Sports Awards for the team category in 2008 after his Olympic gold medal in the doubles alongside Stan Wawrinka and in 2014 after the Davis Cup title with the Swiss team. In 2020 he was also voted the best Swiss Sportsman in the past 70 years.
“I am happy to move on to my retirement. I am happy that I dealt with this stage of my life well. It was something that I dreaded, but it ended better than I thought. I am keeping fit by spending a lot of time in the gym, but I have not decided a plan for next year. I will spend my Christmas holiday in Switzerland”, said Federer.
